Food for thought... At this point, it may be helpful to create a list of reasons 'for' and reasons 'against' blowing out the candle. When examining the situation, consider the condition of the Mandarin. What are his current circumstances? Don't the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one? (Okay. So I swiped that line from a Star Trek movie.) Often, the question is raised as to whether or not we have the right to make the decision to end the life of another human being, regardless of the 'benefits' it will provide? The counter to that is whether or not you would give up your life, if you were the Mandarin, knowing that it would bring 200 years of peace and prosperity to the world? There is no way to tell the Mandarin what is happening, but if you could, would he tell you to blow out the candle? If you were sure that that would be his answer, would it change your decision now? Would it make it easier to blow out the candle? |
